4.Educational System, Length of Study and Credit Requirements

The length of education for PhD students is three (3) years.

If due to special circumstances a PhD student is unable to complete their studies, research objectives or take part in thesis defense on time, the student must apply in person, following the writing of the supervisor’s opinion and signature, the approval of the School affiliated. The application should be submitted to the Graduate School for approval and College of International Students for archiving. The maximum length of time that student can study at the University is six (6) years and during this extension period international students shall pay for the study and accommodation fees as required.

Credit Requirements: For PhD courses, a credit system has been implemented and consists of degree and non-degree courses. Degree courses must be no less than seven (7) credits, and the total credits must equal thirteen (13) credits or above.

5.Course Introduction

The frontier of management and economics:This course mainly focuses on some frontier hotspots, key points and difficult research issues in the current management science field. It takes the form of inviting professors and experts in the field to give lectures. The course content is mainly divided into three parts, which are China’s Achievements in Economic Development, the economic relationship between China and U.S. , global climate change and energy policies and the logistics and supply chain management sections.

Game theory and information economics:This course provides a brief introduction to the basis of decision theory, the key concepts and models in game theory and information economics. This course will be devoted to explore the structure of the game by introducing different forms and styles of them and their solution concepts. Also, this course will turn its focus on modeling and several popular applications of game theory.

Optimization theory and method:This lecture intends to provide the details of recent advances of optimization sciences and promote the applications of optimization methods in application. This lecture also provides a forum for students to review and disseminate quality research work on optimization approaches and their applications in the context of application and to identify critical issues for further developments

6.Training Style and Methods

The training of doctoral students is based on scientific research, combined with the scientific research projects of their supervisors so that doctoral research and paper writing can be pursued. Doctoral supervisors should concern themselves with the healthy growth of their PhD students and should require those students to earnestly learn Chinese language and Chinese culture, understand current affairs and policies, and participate in activities such as labour for the public good.

According to the requirements of the training objectives, PhD students should study a particular set of courses and achieve the required credits to broaden their knowledge, deepen their professional theoretical foundations, grasp the frontiers, development trends, and latest achievements, and experimental methods of the discipline.

The training of PhD students is implemented by the supervisor tutorial system. In this way, supervision is carried out under the supervisor and with a group of three to five (3-5) experts that the supervisor leads. In this way, the supervisor, research group, and PhD student can bring the initiative of each component into full play. Moreover, individualized instruction will be implemented according to a student's ability using a variety of methods, promote and encourage interlinkages between related discipline, and to promote the development of emerging and marginal disciplines.

PhD students should actively participate in domestic and international academic exchange and cooperation so that scientific horizons could be broadened, and academic thinking excited.

7.Doctoral Thesis

(1)Topic Selection and PhD Proposal

The PhD proposal should be completed in the second semester and at least one year after the proposal approved, can the student apply to participate in the pre-defense. Those who need to postpone the submission of the proposal due to special circumstances, a written application should be submitted to the Graduate School in advance and the time limit for delay shall not exceed six (6) months. After the proposal is accepted, changes in principle are not permitted. If there are, however, major changes in topic selection, the proposal should be rewritten.

(2)Thesis Midterm Evaluation

The doctoral dissertation work is to be carried out to the midterm and at that time, PhD students shall submit a midterm report to an expert review team in the form of an on-campus public academic report on the thesis progress, periodic results, plans and measures for the next phase, and to submit a written report for expert deliberation.

At the end of a midterm evaluation of PhD students, the classifications of “passed”, “postponed re-evaluation”, and “failed” are possible. For those students whose evaluation is classified as “postponed re-evaluation”, a half-year inspection period will be given, and assessment will be conducted at the end of that half-year. PhD students who have received a classification of “failed”, or who have not passed the midterm evaluation one year before the end of the maximum length of study, shall be dismissed from the University in accordance with the relevant regulations. The expert review team shall report results to the Graduate School in the School the student resides. Following deliberation, the results shall be reported to the School for approval and a decision shall be made.

(3)Thesis Writing and Requirements

This is conducted according to University thesis writing requirements. The doctoral thesis should have a precisely chosen topic, be based on accurate data so that correct conclusions can be drawn. The format should also be standard and written concisely.

(4)Thesis Pre-defense and Defense

PhD graduates must complete all required courses, pass all the courses, and complete all required procedures before they are allowed to apply for thesis pre-defense. Only those students who have passed the pre-defense and blind review can apply for the final defense and the time interval between the thesis pre-defense and final defense shall be no less than three (3) months.

(5)Degree Applications

According to the specific implementation methods outlined in theNanjing University of Information Science & Technology Masters and Doctorate Degree Conferment RegulationsandNanjing University of Information Science & Technology Regulations on the Program and Qualifications of International Doctoral Candidates (Trial), the content of the dissertation and research results must conform to the standards of this specific discipline.

8.Practice

The Academic Report is compulsory and is worth one (1) credit.

During the period of doctoral thesis work and excluding the PhD Proposal, a public academic report lasting for no less than one (1) hour should be held at least once. The student’s supervisor and the school affiliated are responsible for assessing the quality of the academic report. PhD students should also participate in no less than six (6) academic activities including but not limited to academic reports, conferences, teaching and technology competitions both on and off the University campus.
